The wind rose, the rain fell, and the sky darkened: Just another happy mudders' day at the old ballpark for the St Charles varsity, who continued their soggy march through the IHSLA playoffs with a 12-3 quarterfinals win over Barrington on Saturday.
The victory propels StC into the state semifinals for the first time ever against a now-familiar foe: the defending Illinois champs, New Trier. The Trevians are the sole Illinois team to |
beat StC this season.
Saturday's victory, the third in the past two weeks played in the pouring rain, featured seven goals from the attack line of Conor Hamilton, Dylan Ward and Thomas Feicco, as well as four from middies Ben Dvorak, CJ Nemec and Sean Brogan.
And let us not forget longpole Madden Titus's crowd-pleasing, coast-to-coast clear and goal. "That was the first time in my entire career that I've |
had an open look at the goal like that," Madden told The Daily Herald. "So I was pretty excited."
No more so than the wet fans who, just moments after the final horn sounded, scurried to find cover as the Park District's lightning sensor siren cut through the heavy, gray air. Some things, like rain and big games, just seem meant to be.
