Varsity 15 • Neuqua Valley Wildcats 5 |
Winning for the first time in four seasons on the Neuqua Valley home field, the StC Varsity clinched its first outright DuPage Conference Championship since that same year.
Last year, the two teams shared the Conference title. But this season it's StC's alone, thanks to a perfect DuPage 1 & 2 mark of 9-0 going into next Thursday's final conference game, with Waubonsie Valley.
Oddly enough, a victory that game on StC Senior Night would give this team the same unblemished conference mark the JV had, four years ago, when many of these Seniors were freshmen and now Varsity Head Coach Andy Thompson was JV Head Coach.
Five seniors -- Thomas Feicco, Conor Hamilton, C.J. Nemec, Scott Schowe and Dylan Ward -- combined for 13 of the 15 scores, with Cam Caruso and Zach McCullough adding a goal apiece. In net, goalie Sean McGushin had 14 saves, but it was his clearing which drew Coach Thompson's praise after the game.
"Sean was very efficient," said Coach Thompson. "His 86% [clearing rate] led to many fast
break situations for us which led into goals or quality shots on goal."
Coach Thompson also lauded the defense, which "knocked down multiple feeds to the crease that potentially could have led to
shots on goal."
Junior Middies Cam Caruso and Luke Rabelhofer distinguished themselves as well.
"Cam Caruso led the way in assists with two," said Coach Thompson. "As Cam has done the whole year, he does a
great job of finding the open man and making the smart play, not the selfish play.
"Luke Rabelhofer continues to win faceoffs," he added. "His win percentage is right around 80% on the season and doesn't show any signs of slowing down." |
