D-pole John Ziegler cuts to clear against Southlake Carroll. Against Libertyville, "John did a great job of coming off the bench when Dom [Imbordino] went down with an injury," says Coach Thompson. "It is never an easy thing to come off the bench in the middle of a cold game and be expected to get right in the mix of things." Dom later returned to the action. Photo by Dennis McGushin.

Wait for it: 'Home' opener a cold, wet win for Varsity

Bad weather wiped out the Varsity's first two scheduled games on its Illinois slate, making the Saturday game against Libertyville at Benedictine the "home" and in-state season opener for the team. But the wait was well worth it, as St Charles took control of the game in the fourth quarter to overtake the Wildcats and earn a 7-6 win.
"Going in, I knew it was going to be an evenly matched game," says Head Coach Andy

Thompson. "Especially after seeing that Libertyville beat Lake Forest and lost to Loyola by just one goal in the last minute."
StC jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 4-1, and at the half led 4-2. But in the third quarter, Libertyville grabbed the momentum and the lead, 6-5. Chad Ellis took a Ben Dvorak feed to knot the game at 6-6 at the 7:48 mark in the fourth quarter, and then scored unassisted at 2:58 to propel StC into a lead it wouldn't give up.
"Chad came through for us big time with his scoring and off-ball awareness," says Coach Thompson of the sophomore, whose four goals led all scorers. "And Cam Caruso [with two goals; see video] also performed well on offense with his dodging and shooting." Luke Rabelhofer's goal rounded out the StC scoring. (See video)
Sean Brogan assisted on Luke's goal and one of Cam's, and Ben Dvorak found Chad for two of his scores. Paul De Bord also set up Chad for another goal (and paid the price with a big hit from a Wildcat longpole; see video).
And speaking of big hits: Goalie Sean McGushin saved eight shots and put his own big hit on a Libertyville shooter (see video).
"As usual, Sean played a great game in goal," says Coach Thompson. "His clearing ability is such a huge asset for our team and helps set us up on so many fast breaks."
The defense had a solid game, adds Coach Thompson. "Tyler Hines' play at the end of the game, to pick up that ball near our crease with three guys on him, was huge." (See video.)
"Overall, we played well," he says. "But it certainly wasn't our best game of the year."
