About the Dragons :
From westsidelax.com
The Dragons have some rebuilding to do after losing their head coach and nine seniors, including eight starters and five future NCAA Division II and III players, to graduation. Coach David Smith has moved on and been replaced by Johns Hopkins graduate and former NCAA Division I national champion Josh Pico.
As for its talent pool, Southlake Carroll has a nationally-revered football program, so it certainly has plenty of athletes to draw from.
Southlake Carroll brings back 11 players from last year's varsity roster, and it also should have experienced players who participated last season on the school's Division II varsity team.
"We expect to do pretty well this season, even as the competition with private schools in our conference gets better," Southlake Carroll assistant coach Rich Coccaro said.
The Dragons will be led by senior attackman Tanner Franznick, senior attackman Ben Nelson, senior defenseman Peter Schmidt and junior attackman Connor Lehane.
Franznick is big and strong, coming in at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, and has a hard shot, Coccaro said. Nelson is athletic, has great field vision and was the team's leading point producer last season, Coccaro said. Schmidt is a great team leader and motivator who will be transitioning to defense from long-stick middie, and Lehane -- the younger brother of former Southlake Carroll star Greg Lehane -- is quick and difficult to cover.

From the X, Chad Ellis has his choice of either Charlie Smunt (12) or Alek Szmajda (51). Chad netted seven goals on the Texas trip, and Alek and Charlie both had a single score each. Photos by Dennis McGushin.

Total team effort nets big win

The PT was plentiful for everyone on the roster as the Varsity wrapped up its Texas trip with a 12-4 win over Southlake Carroll at Old Dragon Stadium in Southlake, Texas, on Saturday, March 29.
The scoring was shared nearly as equally as in game one of the trip, when eight players found the net; against Southlake Carroll, six players scored. First among equals was surely Sean Brogan, with five goals. Cam Caruso added three scores, and Chad Ellis, Ben Dvorak, Chris Forsell and Madden Titus each put in a single score.
Assists were earned by Chad Ellis, Paul De Bord, Chris Forsell, Tyler Hines and Zach McCullough.
In goal, starter Sean McGushin stopped six shots before giving way to Blake Chamberlain, who saved two shots. Pat McGushin finished up in goal, saving one.
Following the game, the varsity, its coaches and its parents were treated to a very friendly, very filling Texas-sized barbecue by the host Southlake Carroll Boosters. The food and fellowship was terrific, but most agree that the event's highlight was the impromptu wrestling match (or was it a rasslin' match?) that broke out between our Billy Rawson (a StC East wrestler) and a Southlake player. Who won? You'll have to ask Billy.

Hats off to our 'trail bosses'

The Varsity's 2-1 Spring Break trip to Texas was a terrific week well spent in the Longhorn State.
The Club thanks organizers Dennis and Maureen McGushin and Gregg and Ann Dvorak for staking our trail southward,

and then riding herd once we got there. A cowpoke couldn't ask for a better bunch of trail bosses.
Thanks also to drivers Gary Campana, Jeff Forsell and Ray Ziegler, and to the many parents who cheered on the team (and joined in the fun).
Check out Dennis McGushin's photos of our off-the-field Texas fun here.
Attackman and Co-Captain Sean Brogan readies for the pass. Sean scored five times against Southlake Carroll.
