About the Dragons :
From westsidelax.com
The Dragons have some rebuilding to do after losing their head coach and nine seniors, including eight starters and five future NCAA Division II and III players, to graduation. Coach David Smith has moved on and been replaced by Johns Hopkins graduate and former NCAA Division I national champion Josh Pico.
As for its talent pool, Southlake Carroll has a nationally-revered football program, so it certainly has plenty of athletes to draw from.
Southlake Carroll brings back 11 players from last year's varsity roster, and it also should have experienced players who participated last season on the school's Division II varsity team.
"We expect to do pretty well this season, even as the competition with private schools in our conference gets better," Southlake Carroll assistant coach Rich Coccaro said.
The Dragons will be led by senior attackman Tanner Franznick, senior attackman Ben Nelson, senior defenseman Peter Schmidt and junior attackman Connor Lehane.
Franznick is big and strong, coming in at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, and has a hard shot, Coccaro said. Nelson is athletic, has great field vision and was the team's leading point producer last season, Coccaro said. Schmidt is a great team leader and motivator who will be transitioning to defense from long-stick middie, and Lehane -- the younger brother of former Southlake Carroll star Greg Lehane -- is quick and difficult to cover.
